Which Espers are optional?

Siren is the story unlock. The remaining summons require exploration or optional quests. The acquisition references report that they remain available after the story. Fina and Archwitch Fina use the summoning system; it is separate from equipping a Vision.

Esper Access Required route
Siren Chapter 1 Win the Siren’s Tower story battle.
Ramuh Chapter 2 Mt. Thunderclap upper entrance: inspect the gravestone and win.
Carbuncle Chapter 3 Ruby Cave epitaph and three Ruby Fragments; no recruitment battle.
Titan Chapter 4 Gaia Hammer from Fledgling Battle 5; break the Sealing Stone and win.
Ifrit Airship / chapter 5 Enter the volcano in southern Zoldaad and win.
Shiva Chapter 5 Fly into the snowstorm southwest of Mysidia and win.
Leviathan Chapter 5 Finish Nichol’s Duty and its Lake Dorr scene.
Odin Chapter 6 Iron Splitter, after Holy clears the miasma.
Bahamut Chapter 7 Other eight Espers, Mt. Reizan progress and the Enterprise event.

Carbuncle: collect the fragments in order

Start by examining the Ruby Cave epitaph. Then collect:

  1. Southeast of Rukh Cave, between the two circular ponds.
  2. The eastern coast, southwest of Squall’s sanctum and east of Cave of Waters.
  3. West of the seven waterfalls: cross the two wooden bridges and climb the grassy rise.

Return to the epitaph after collecting the third fragment. Searching the landmarks before starting the riddle does not reproduce the listed sequence.

Titan and Leviathan: clear the prerequisite first

For Titan, obtain the Gaia Hammer from the Colosseum reward before returning to the Sealing Stone west of Kol. Interact with the stone to use the hammer, then complete the fight.

For Leviathan, the chapter-3 story battle is not the recruitment reward. Start Nichol’s Duty in Olderion. Follow its fisherman, Lake Dorr, marked encounter and Cave of Waters objectives, then complete the concluding Lake Dorr scene. Confirm the summon notification rather than checking off the earlier boss victory.

Odin: follow Iron Splitter through the hand-in

After the Holy progression in Gronoa, examine Bladerain Stele to begin the chain. Go to the stele northeast of Duggle, accept the trial and defeat Odin’s Shadow. The final step is the old man at Nameless Ruins; return there to complete the quest.

Bahamut: why does the airship event not appear?

Check the other eight acquisitions first. After the chapter-7 Mt. Reizan events, rest aboard the Enterprise, let the Archwitch Fina scene play and speak with Evan near the controls to visit the Esper. This is a sequence of prerequisites, not a random world-map encounter.

Before fighting, prepare for the Megaflare countdown described by Item Level. Do not assume Bahamut has a normal elemental weakness. The trophy checklist distinguishes obtaining three Espers from obtaining all nine.
