Source-reviewed optional encounter. Published guides disagree on an exact intermediate HP threshold, so the route uses visible phase signals rather than a false precise trigger.

Reach Whirlpool Hollow after obtaining the airship

Fly to the whirlpool beside Grandshelt’s large bridge and enter Whirlpool Hollow. Inspect the Vision Crystal to accept the battle. This requires airship access at the transition into chapter 5; a greyed-out Vision entry earlier in the game is not an accessible recruitment route.

Both encounter guides identify a level-45 opponent with a shared 250,000-HP pool. Their suggested preparation level is higher than the boss’s displayed level. Treat that recommendation as guidance, not a guaranteed win condition.

Bring answers to three different phases

Have a dedicated party healer, a way to protect vulnerable characters and multiple elemental attacks. Warrior of Light on a defensive character and Firion’s earned Arms Akimbo on a healer are source-described options; verify the awakening, mastery and AP requirements before building around them.

Counter stance

While Masamune in Waiting is active, stop using physical attacks that trigger its counter. Use appropriate magic or recovery during the stance, then reassess after it drops. Do not assume the opening phase has a natural elemental weakness.

Immunity and infusions

When damage stops during a phase transition, use the window for healing and preparation. After an infusion appears, inspect the current resistance with Libra. Reusing the previous element can turn an effective attack into a resisted or ineffective one.

Keep recovery ready for Heartless Angel and the large party-wide HP losses described in both references. Review cover effects in your actual setup; do not plan on an unprotected character surviving simply because the previous phase was comfortable.

Final countdown

The final phase introduces Divine Proclamation and a meteor countdown. Recover from the transition, then use saved offensive resources before it expires. VGTimes identifies Light as useful here and Dark absorption; avoid spending the finish on Dark attacks.

Why no exact middle-phase HP trigger?

The two guides describe different intermediate thresholds. A visible immunity transition and the new status are more useful than an unsupported exact percentage. The final reward is the Sephiroth Vision, one of the 26 acquisition goals.
